About Me

You can also read my profile on Psychology Today’s website.

I was born and raised in southwestern CT.  I attended the University of Maryland at College Park and graduated with a BA in Psychology and a Certificate in Women’s  Studies in 1996.  While in college, I spent a summer interning at the American Psychological Association to study Women’s Issues. I also did some research assistance work with the Psychology Dept at UMCP in dream research.1-img_8943

For graduate school,  I attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and graduated with a Masters in Social Work in 1998.  I worked in the Baltimore area in the fields of domestic violence (counseling and victim court advocacy),  a school for special needs children, and inpatient health care.  Then my husband and  I moved to San Jose California.  I received my LCSW in CA shortly thereafter.  I continued to work in the health care field both inpatient and outpatient, as well as on a geriatric psychiatric unit.  In 2002 I opened my own private psychotherapy practice in Campbell CA.  I worked a lot in the cancer community as both a volunteer with the American Cancer Society and was employed on an Oncology unit. I facilitated a Cancer Support Group at two different San Jose hospitals. When I opened my private practice in CA, I started out with a niche of working with cancer patients and their families. I expanded my practice to other populations such as mood disorders, anxiety and phobias, and grief. I had a very successful practice for 5 years and then my family and I chose to move back to the east coast to be closer to our extended families.  We have been in North Carolina since Dec of 2007.  I received my LCSW in the state of NC  and worked briefly with a group practice in Cary before opening my private practice here, “Compass Counseling”, located in downtown historic  Apex in 2009.

Clinically I utilize a cognitive behavioral approach with clients. My practice is open to adolescents ages 14 and up and adults.  I offer individual and couples psychotherapy.  My clinical specialty is anxiety, phobia and panic disorders but I have extensive experience working with mood disorders and cancer patients and their families.  I have taught workshops at community agencies in regards to caregiver stress and aging.  I also have an interest in working with families of the military to prepare them for their eventual arrival home and challenges ahead.

I live in the Triangle area with my husband, two children, dog and two cats. In addition to working with clients and spending time with my family, I enjoy traveling, horseback riding and golf.

Professional and Civic Activities:  I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers and Daughters of the American Revolution.
